How to Make a Miniature Backpack – Tutorial & Pattern

miniaturebackpack_cp2
Here’s a quick tutorial to make your own miniature backpack. Because sometimes you need a tiny functional backpack to carry your tiny things. I made this to fit a Chickenpants, naturally, but of course it is also perfect for a Blythe. Some might say even more perfect.

Here’s what you need:

  • A small amount of pleather (or leather, or felt…)
  • One tiny button
  • A snap
  • 8″ of ribbon
  • Thread, needle, scissors (and a sewing machine if you’ve got one!)

First, download this pattern.

Then cut out the pattern pieces.

Sew on the snaps and tiny button. When sewing the snap on what will be the front piece, you want it to rest about 1/4″ from the top.

(And you may want to make sure that you sew it to the actual TOP, and not flip the piece over like I did. Whoops. But as we shall see, it will all turn out.)

Sew the straps onto the back, as shown.

(A note about the straps: I used two 4″ pieces of ribbon. You could of course make the straps out of pleather to match your bag. I tried that on my first attempt, and the little busters TORE when I was trying to put Blythe’s arm through. So, um, reinforce those babies somehow, if that’s the route you want to go. But you probably already knew that, you smart foxy reader, you.)

Sew the skinny side piece on to the back. Place them together, right sides touching. You want it to start about an inch and a half (3.8 cm) from the top. As far as seam allowances go, seriously, you are just going to have to eyeball it. You want as little SA there as possible while still maintaining structural integrity.

Pinch it and hold it so you can get around those corners.

Right sides still touching, pin the front piece in place on the skinny side piece.

Sew that baby down, turn it inside out, and hit the town! Er, books!

See? TOTALLY functional.
